MDA is a distributor in N. America for imagery from the European Space Agency's ERS (European Resource Satellite) radar satellite program. ERS 1 was lunched in 1991 and now operates on a stand-by basis. ERS 2 was launched in 1995 with a three year design life. The satellites are operated by the European Space Agency (ESA) and offer the following benefits:

    • Equipped with three instruments: Active microwave instrument (AMI), Radar Altimeter, and Along-Track Scanning Radiometer
    • C-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sensor
    • Cloud-free SAR images of the Earth's surface (dependent on existence of local ground receiving station)
    • 30-metre resolution
    • 100-km swath width
    • Fixed viewing or incidence angle (23 degrees)
