Richmond, BC - MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd. (MDA) and Pictometry International Corp. have signed an agreement whereby MDA has the exclusive Canadian license to Pictometry’s digital aerial imaging technology and measuring software.
Under this agreement, MDA is collecting georeferenced (location-enabled), digital imagery over Canadian cities using Pictometry’s patented aerial imaging capture system that images in both the oblique (angled in a 3D-like manner) and ortho (vertical) directions. High-resolution aerial photos for each city will be catalogued in an “image library” and will be updated every 2 years. Imaging of Canadian population centers is now underway.
Pictometry’s measuring software - included with each image library- allows clients to access up to 20 different views of a location or feature of interest at a resolution as high as 15 cm. The unique viewing and analytical capability of the software provides users with detailed information such as feature dimensions (e.g. height, width and area) and feature proximity making it a powerful planning tool.
The impact of such technology is far reaching. Users of the imagery and measuring software include: Emergency 9-1-1 call centers, disaster management agencies, transportation departments, law enforcement agencies, fire departments, city planning, geographic information systems, engineering departments, utilities, and real estate agencies.
