Flooding in Somalia imaged by RADARSAT-1

Date Posted: Jan. 31, 2007

Following months of drought, severe rain storms in late October and mid-Novemeber 2006 resulted in heavy flooding conditions in Somalia. Areas of flooding can be seen by comparing the May 16, 2002 RADARSAT-1 image (non-flooded) to the November 27th, 2006 image ( flooded). In a radar image, water appears black and is easily distinguished from a land surface (whose rough texture appears bright due to the backscatter it generates).
