On June 3rd, 2005, Canada's RADARSAT-1 satellite made its 50,000th orbit around the Earth. Launched November 5, 1995, RADARSAT-1 is the world's first commercial Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite.
The RADARSAT-1 mission has garnered international acclaim for near-real time data delivery services provided to benefit time-critical operations. Data and information can be delivered within in as little as 1-4 hours after downlink to support applications such as disaster management, ice mapping, pollution monitoring and ship surveillance.
Today, RADARSAT-1 data and services are used around the world to support a myriad of application in the fields of cartography, ice studies, hydrology, agriculture, oceanography and coastal monitoring. The mission is supported by over 80 partners and 26 certified network stations throughout the world.
In 2006, RADARSAT-2 will be launched and the RADARSAT legacy will continue. The key benefits that the new satellite will offer include high-resolution imaging and polarimetric data.
RADARSAT-1 Facts:
- Orbits the Earth 14 times a day
- Has flown over 2 billion km around the Earth since launch
