Oil Spill off the Coast of Lebanon

Date Posted: Aug. 30, 2006

Air strikes on July 13 and 15, 2006 hit the oil-fuelled power plant of Jiyeh on the Lebanese coastline some 30 km south of Beirut. An estimated 30,000 tonnes of heavy fuel oil spilled into the Mediterranean from the Jiyeh power plant. A combination of wind and currents pushed the oil out to sea and along the coast. The oil spill is visible (dark areas) on this RADARSAT-1 image acquired July 23, 2006.
