Flooding in Gloucester, UK imaged by RADARSAT-1

Heavy rains in June and July caused massive flooding in parts of the United Kingdom. Floodwaters rose to 60-year highs in Gloucester damaging homes and leaving many without power or fresh water.

To map the flood extent, geomatics specialists merged and compared a pre-flood RADARSAT-1 image (acquired June 4th, 1996) with two images acquired during the flooding event (July 27 and July 31, 2007). Areas of change (i.e. flooding along the River Severn) are identified in red (July 27, 2007) and orange (July 31, 2007).
