Background: The Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) sensor on RADARSAT-1 is sensitive to changes in surface texture - giving different return signal information for different surfaces. Oil-covered water is smoother than surrounding water reflecting the radar signal away from the satellite. As a result, oil slicks appear as distinct areas of darkness on an image.
Manmade structures (such as ships or platforms) give high signal returns to the SAR sensor and appear as bright point targets against the water background.
