Likely Oil Slicks Identified in Imagery

The RADARSAT-1 scene has been interpreted to locate possible oil slicks (outlined in yellow). Bright white targets in the surrounding water are likely drilling rigs and production platforms.

RADARSAT-1 image of the Gulf of Mexico acquired September 2nd, 2005. Image has been displayed to enhance the contrast between possible oil slicks and the background water.

Background:
The Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) sensor on RADARSAT-1 is sensitive to changes in surface texture - giving different return signal information for different surfaces. Oil-covered water is smoother than surrounding water reflecting the radar signal away from the satellite. As a result, oil slicks appear as distinct areas of darkness on an image.
Manmade structures (such as ships or platforms) give high signal returns to the SAR sensor and appear as bright point targets against the water background.
